Highway 1 Theatre Company is an independent theatre company, managed and operated by volunteers who have undertaken university training in at least one field of theatre craft, and have worked in community, professional and independent theatre for 20+ years. Highway 1 is not geographically based in one location; instead, we are focussed on touring productions to regional Victorian towns. We strive to help build strong community wellbeing and connections, through the Arts.
Highway 1 Theatre Company was founded in 2008, and in the beginning mostly performed in Melbourne. The Company was able to undertake its first regional touring program in 2018, followed by another in 2019. So far, we have toured productions to Bendigo, Creswick, Daylesford, Kyneton, Maldon, Murtoa, Port Fairy, Yackandandah, and Yea. We feel humbled to have received invitations to return, and consider this a compliment to the work that we are doing.
Highway 1 Theatre Company is passionate about creating high quality productions of well-known shows, contributing to the community, and making entertainment opportunities available for regional Victorian communities. Highway 1 Theatre Company aims to tour to small towns outside of larger established touring networks, and in doing so has enabled more than 2000 regional Victorians to enjoy a night out together experiencing quality theatre.
All our productions have a Melbourne launch before we take them on the road, and to date this has included venues in Carlton, Footscray, Malvern, and Northcote. This year we are proud to announce we have been programmed in The Basin Theatre’s 2022 season, and so we will add the Dandenong Ranges to this list.
Our mission is to ‘bring theatre, stories, and entertainment to regional Victoria’, and in doing so we offer communities a chance to come together in a positive way to strengthen and connect.
